About: The City of Mitcham has taken community participation to the next level with its new Verge Greening Guide, released as part of the council’s broader Verge Greening Initiative. This initiative is designed to support residents in transforming their verges into vibrant, sustainable community assets. 

The guidelines give residents clear, practical advice on how to green their verges, including what to plant, how to prepare the soil, and how to maintain a thriving verge garden. City of Mitcham is helping locals turn underused spaces into pockets of biodiversity.

This kind of community led greening is essential. When thousands of small actions add up, the impact on urban cooling, habitat creation and neighbourhood character can be huge. The Verge Greening Initiative provides the framework, and the new guide gives residents the confidence to get started.
