Strengthened tree canopy target

Lead: State Planning Commission and Department for Housing and Development (Planning and Land Use Services)

Partner/s: Green Adelaide

About: The Greater Adelaide Regional Plan (GARP) sets a vision to guide growth to 2051, planning for 315,000 new homes, 254,000 jobs, and the infrastructure needed for 670,000 more people. As part of this, an updated tree canopy target — shaped by the Urban Greening Strategy and consultation —supports key goals for urban greening and biodiversity.

Strategy alignment: Priority 1, Action 2.

Status:

  • COMPLETED - GARP released on 17 March 2025.
  • UNDERWAY - Investigate and deliver planning and non-planning mechanisms that make it easier for developers to maximise biodiversity outcomes in new development.
  • TO START - Investigate tree canopy cover sub-targets for different land uses and landscape types, and investigate appropriate urban heat spatial mapping and identify policy response options.
