The Transformation of the River Torrens: Fish, Flows & Habitat

When you think of the River Torrens / Karrawirra Pari, do you picture a thriving, healthy ecosystem - or do you recall the days of it struggling after decades of pollution and land clearing?

Join us to discover how partnerships, science, and community action are restoring the river into a vibrant waterway once again.

Join Principal Hydroecologist Dr Doug Green, Department for Environment and Water, as he delves into the fascinating ecology of South Australia’s seasonal rivers and the critical role natural flow regimes play in sustaining healthy ecosystems. This session will explore how seasonal patterns influence life in and around our rivers, how climate change is disrupting these patterns, and what is being done to manage and adapt to these challenges.

What’s included:

  • From then to now – how the river has changed over time, and what those changes mean for its health.
  • Restoration in action – an overview of key projects, including River Torrens Recovery, Gross Pollutant Trap management, Breakout Creek, and environmental water provisions.
  • Freshwater native fish – why they’re vital for ecosystem health, why so many are at risk, and the conservation work underway to protect them.
  • Conservation and monitoring – insights into programs such as environmental flow monitoring in the Mount Lofty Ranges, surrogate wetlands, and threatened species reintroductions (including the Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon).
  • How you can help – simple, practical ways for individuals and communities to care for the Torrens into the future.

Speakers:

  • Dr Sylvia Zukowski, Senior Ecologist, Nature Glenelg Trust
  • Tammy Partridge, Team Leader – Urban Water, Green Adelaide
